VGI Announces the Launch of DISMISS® Instruments for the VerteLoc™ Minimally Invasive Spine Stabilization System

VGI introduces a revolutionary surgical instrument system that is smaller in diameter than a pencil. The DISMISS® instrument system is designed specifically for the implantation of the VerteLoc™ Minimally Invasive Spine Stabilization System and will be unveiled at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons meeting in Phoenix, Arizona starting on March 12, 2009.

Winston-Salem, NC (PRWEB) March 3, 2009 -- VG Innovations, Inc. (www.vginnovations.com) (VGI), announces the launch of a new surgical instrumentation system, named DISMISS®.

"DISMISS® stands for Directional Instrument System for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery," stated VGI's President and CEO, Dan Grayson. "We have received very positive feedback from our surgeon users, regarding the biomechanical advantages of the VerteLoc™ Minimally Invasive Spine Stabilization system, so the next logical step was to further refine the system's current instrumentation. We have now taken minimally invasive spinal facet fusion to a whole new level with the DISMISS® instruments."

"The DISMISS® instruments, used specifically for the implantation of the VerteLoc™ implants, are smaller in diameter than a pencil," noted Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer Dr. Tov Vestgaarden. "In addition, we have not only reduced the size, but also the number of instruments required for surgical implantation. This is just the beginning of a whole new era in surgical instrumentation from VGI."

"New sets of the DISMISS® instruments will be distributed during the second and third quarters of 2009 to select VGI distributors throughout the United States," Grayson added. "These new instruments will allow our distributors to introduce the VerteLoc™ system to a more diverse surgeon base."

The VerteLoc™ Minimally Invasive Spine Stabilization System (www.verteloc.com) is designed to allow earlier intervention in the continuum of spinal care. The procedure should prolong or prevent more invasive spine procedures in indicated patients, which would provide significant benefits to the quality of life versus traditional methods of spinal fusion.

Sunetics' New Laser Paddle Brush for Hair Enhancement Provides Largest Coverage Area of All Hand-Held Devices

New hair enhancement laser device offers best coverage available.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) March 3, 2009 -- Sunetics International announces the official launch of the new Laser Paddle Brush, an advanced at-home hair care device for men and women with weak or thinning hair that delivers a greater degree of low level laser energy to the scalp than any other hand-held unit on the market.

"Sunetics' Laser Paddle Brush is an important advancement for consumers as it provides the maximum level of scalp coverage at a more optimal low level laser energy wavelength than any other 'brush' or 'comb' currently available," said Dr. Charles Maricle, Chief Technological Officer of Sunetics International. "Low level laser therapy has been demonstrated to effectively improve the appearance of hair, making it look fuller, thicker, shinier and healthier."

With the new Laser Paddle Brush, Sunetics has enhanced the size of the laser area by creating three rows of laser diodes utilizing 12 true laser diodes. Sunetics also uses its patented technology to expand the laser beam pattern, thus creating a superior coverage area of laser energy. The Laser Paddle Brush was developed to deliver the largest coverage area of all hand-held devices so that consumers can experience in the privacy of their own homes the maximum amount of laser energy at the optimal wavelength level. The average usage time is just 10 minutes per day, three times per week.

"Customers who use the Sunetics' Laser Paddle Brush for at-home laser hair therapy care will also be able to use it on the road when they travel since it is so portable as well as rechargeable," says John Carullo, Director of Marketing for Sunetics.

Key Facts for Consumers About the Sunetics' Laser Paddle Brush:

• Maximum Laser Energy - Designed with 12 true laser diodes, the most of any other hand-held unit on the market. Each laser diode used for hair rejuvenation has a wavelength of 650 nm.

• Superior Scalp Coverage - Uses multiple, wide-pattern, true laser diodes to provide maximum coverage of the scalp for men and women. The laser diodes are positioned on the brush to produce an expanded elliptical laser light pattern that provides maximum coverage of the scalp.

• Portable - Unlike other hand-held laser devices that are plugged in, the Laser Paddle Brush is cordless and uses a rechargeable battery to make it portable and easier to use with maximum energy.

• Unique Bristle Design - A true laser "brush," the device has over 75 soft, gentle scalp-massaging bristles. The unique soft bristles are designed to not break or damage fine or weakened hair.

• Certified, Patented and Approved - The Laser Paddle Brush is a U.S. patented device (#7,258,695) that is CE-certified and complies with all FDA manufacturing standards and safety regulations for personal use as well as 11 FDA performance standards for laser products.

Evidence for Low Level Laser Hair Therapy:

In January of 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially cleared the first hand-held laser device (www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf6/K060305.pdf) to treat hair loss and to re-grow hair.

Previous cosmetic clinical studies performed by Sunetics have shown that, as a result of its laser hair therapy program, 86-percent of participants reported the appearance of healthier hair, 78-percent reported the appearance of thicker hair, 76-percent reported the appearance of fuller hair and 85-percent of the participants reported overall satisfaction with the Sunetics Laser Hair Therapy program.

LifeMasters Introduces Health Activation Tool to Disease Management Participants

Innovator of the PAM™ Assessment in Chronic Disease Coaching

Irvine, Calif. (Vocus) March 2, 2009 -- In keeping with its commitment to implement the latest advances in behavior change, LifeMasters (https://www.lifemasters.com/innovation/) Supported SelfCare, Inc. is the first disease management company in the country to introduce a powerful health activation tool for use with its chronically ill participants.

The Patient Activation Measure™ (PAM™) was developed by Judith Hibbard, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Oregon to assess an individual's knowledge, skills and confidence in playing a role in one's own health and healthcare. By understanding participants' "activation levels," LifeMasters health professionals can better tailor participant coaching to an individual's level of activation, helping him or her identify and overcome barriers to behavior change.

"We know that higher levels of activation are correlated with improved self-care behaviors," said LifeMasters CEO Christobel Selecky. "By focusing on increasing a participant's activation level, our health coaches can help LifeMasters participants to develop self-efficacy and greater levels of motivation, which ultimately lead to greater confidence in managing their health. We are very excited about the potential that this tool provides us to improve outcomes and enhance sustained engagement."

LifeMasters is a health improvement company with more than 15 years experience in developing scientifically based interventions that target key cost drivers such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, cancer and musculo-skeletal pain. The company began piloting the PAM in 2005. In 2007, it completed a 2-call-center comparison study based on the PAM with Dr. Hibbard and her team and is now widely implementing the use of PAM across all LifeMasters sites and additional research is being considered.

LifeMasters coaches are trained in the use of motivational interviewing techniques - informed by the insight gained from the PAM tool - which allows them to focus on helping participants develop confidence in managing their health (depending on their activation level) rather than on encouraging behaviors they may not be ready to achieve.

The Patient Activation Measure, which is licensed and marketed by Insignia Health, consists of a 10 or 13-question survey that asks people about their beliefs, knowledge and confidence for engaging in a wide range of health behaviors. Based on responses to the survey, each person is assigned an activation score and level. The PAM segments participants into one of four progressively higher activation levels.

At the low end of the spectrum, individuals tend to be passive with regard to managing their health, and may fail to see the connection between their own behaviors and health outcomes. At the high end, individuals understand that relationship and have become good self-managers across a constellation of behaviors. However, even high activation level individuals may benefit from coaching to stay on course when stress occurs.

Answers to the PAM survey give the health professional insight into a participant's frame of reference and help facilitate tailored discussion about what a participant wants to work on. By periodically re-administering the survey and reviewing responses to individual items over time, changes in a participant's activation level can be reassessed and used as a guide for ongoing coaching.

"In using the PAM, LifeMasters is supporting consumers on a journey to improve the self-management competencies that drive health status, and in so doing, helping consumers unlock their potential to flourish," said Chris Delaney, Insignia's Chief Executive Officer.

The level of patient activation varies considerably in the U.S. population, with less than half of the adult population at the highest level of activation, according to a recent study by the Center for Studying Health System Change. More than 85 studies have documented the PAM's ability to effectively measure patient activation and to predict a range of behaviors in wide demographic variability. These include preventive behaviors such as exercise, diet, and smoking cessation, disease-specific self-management behaviors such as medication compliance and health monitoring, and consumer behaviors such as successful interaction with a healthcare provider.

Because of the strong correlation between activation and self-care behaviors, the PAM scores can also greatly enhance the credibility of reported outcomes. While return on investment and closing clinical gaps in care will always be important outcomes measures, the ability to demonstrate a concurrent improvement in activation increases the likelihood that those positive outcomes can be attributed to the health improvement program.

A research project between LifeMasters and Dr. Hibbard's team demonstrated that activation levels and health outcomes can be improved by tailoring participant care plans to the individual's activation level. The full results of this study are expected to be published in June of 2009.

Mannheim, Germany -- A new preparation highly beneficial in patients with ailments from common skin disorders to hepatitis or HIV, is now available in the US without a prescription. Oral intake of the GKL03 synthetic peptides induces modulation and regulation of the immune system. GKL03 (Thymrevit) is a demonstrably potent immmunomodulator effective in the short term.

This preparation was first used in 2004 on tumor patients whose immune system was significantly weakened by chemotherapy or radiotherapy which had been carried out or recently administered. All subjects felt significantly better in several chemotherapy phases each time GKL-03 was taken, and also had better excersise tolerance in endurance test. Since 2004, ongoing clinical trials conducted in Germany, has shown GKL-03 to be adventageous in those with tumourigenic disease, cancer or immuno deficiencies. There are unambiguous findings indicating GKL-03 can protect the body from opportunistic infections where the body has been damaged from pre-existing conditions such as chemotherapy, x-rays, or bacterial, fungal or latent viral infections. "Since such a short term improvement of immune disorders is extremely difficult to achieve, I venture to assume with all reserve a positive effect of the GKL-03" --- Dr. Med Knut Briken, Oncology/Immunobiological Cancer Aftercare, Berlin Germany.

Menersa Demand Spikes on the Heels of Health Report

A recent study that was conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in the US, involving more than six hundred women between the ages of 43 and 53, has concluded that women who are in the menopausal phase, or who were premenopausal, got less sleep at night due to frequent disturbances that were greatly attributed to the symptoms of menopause; namely hot flashes, and or, night sweats. Many menopausal women, who previously have relied upon popular prescription drugs for treating hormonal pathway imbalances, are now turning to natural cures for menopause, like Menersa, because they utilize proprietary blends of clinically proven botanical alternatives that not only correct hormonal pathway imbalances, but also relieve the symptoms of menopause that can contribute to sleep deprivation.

Manalapan, NJ (PRWEB) March 1, 2009 -- Many of the most important functions of our bodies are controlled by hormonal releases. Some hormones help our body to distribute and process fats. Others control the rates at which we grow hair and skin. And yet others can determine how well we will sleep at night. For the millions of women are entering premenopausal stages, or who are already experiencing menopause, their hormones can be bouncing out of control. So much so that it can greatly affect the amounts of sleep that they receive each night and in turn can be detrimental to their overall wellbeing, quality of life and happiness.

In fact, shifting hormones during the menopausal period can greatly contribute to the lack of sleep or disturbed sleeping patterns, generally related to hot flashes, night sweats and other side effects of hormonal pathway imbalances. During a recent study--which was conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in the US--more than six hundred women between the ages of 43 and 53 were asked to make frequent journal entries during their menstrual periods. The studies concluded that women who were showing the earlier signs of menopause got far less sleep at night when compared to those who were still premenopausal. In short: even the earliest symptoms of menopause caused for a greater disturbance of nightly sleep cycles. A trend which increases as the natural phase of menopause sets in.

Yet the most popular prescribed menopause drugs only work to correct hormonal pathway imbalances. Many offer no cure for sleep deprivation or night flashes, which commonly contribute to sleep disturbances during menopause. This is why more women are turning to clinically proven, all-natural menopausal remedies like Menersa--which utilizes the power of a variety of unique botanicals that treat all symptoms of menopause. Menersa is able to also relieve symptoms associated with sleep deprivation by incorporating calming herbs that work to naturally relieve discomforts associated with the symptoms of menopause, and that help to replenish essential and vital bodily nutrients.

"The recent reports of interrupted sleep patterns (as they relate to the symptoms of menopause) has caused a big spike in the online sales of our popular and clinically proven botanical alternative, Menersa," states Constantine Lopez, spokesperson for Vitaloix Labs. "More women are turning to natural cures for menopause that not only work to safely correct hormonal imbalances, but that also offer a cure for common associated symptoms (of menopause) that can really take their toll on the quality of life of the sufferer."

Menersa is an all-natural menopause supplement that is taken daily. It has been clinically proven to be comparable to low-dose transdermal estradiol (Estraderm 25 mcg every 7 days) for relieving hot flashes and the other 34 symptoms of menopause.

Align International Recruitment - Thinking of Working in New Zealand? A Positive Move in Troubled Times

The advantage of using Align Recruitment to apply for work in New Zealand is simple - service. Applying for a new position can be a big challenge at the best of times, add to this the prospect of moving countries and there is a considerable amount of the unknown. Align Recruitment assists job seekers with New Zealand immigration, we have the contacts within the appropriate organizations to make the transfer as smooth as possible.

Christchurch, New Zealand (PRWEB) February 27, 2009 -- So, the global economy has tightened up - jobs are becoming harder to find, competition for available job openings is becoming more intense.

You may be considering a move offshore? Align International Recruitment Ltd (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/) is a boutique recruitment company that helps highly skilled people find work in New Zealand. In early 2009 Align Recruitment launched a new website to assist international job seekers find that 'dream job' and 'dream lifestyle'. in New Zealand.

What are the advantages of moving to New Zealand in the current climate?

Right now, off the back of a dip in New Zealand exports, the New Zealand dollar (NZD) is at a low against most major trading partners. In effect, this means that migrants arriving from (for example) the USA are buying homes at half the price over the same period three or four years ago when the dollar was much stronger. New Zealand has also weathered the start of the global downturn with remarkable resilience - thanks largely to a strong agricultural market and limited exposure to the events happening within the securities market. The recent New Zealand elections saw a right wing 'National' led government assume the reins placing particular emphasis on public spending and tax cuts to continue to stimulate the New Zealand economy.

Another major attraction to New Zealand is opportunity. New Zealand has a number of skill shortage areas as defined by the Department of Labour, in particular in Healthcare. You can visit the Align Recruitment website to browse Clinical Psychologist jobs (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/jobs/-/Clinical-Psychology.php), Physician jobs (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/jobs/-/Medical-Officer-Doctor-Physician.php), jobs for Nurses (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/jobs/-/Nursing.php), Physiotherapist vacancies and Occupational Therapist openings in different parts of New Zealand. But whilst healthcare is a major focus of Align Recruitment, we also like to hear from people in areas such as Project Management, .NET Development (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/jobs/-/.NET-Development.php), Embedded Software Development, Java Development, Testing Protocol Stacks and seeking related Software Engineering jobs (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/professions.php). There is good opportunity for the right people with the right skills in New Zealand.

New Zealand is a nation with a strong migrant tradition. There are many communities represented here with immigrants coming from the USA, the United Kingdom, Canada, Scandinavia and the Asian continent. A key attraction to New Zealand is the great lifestyle. With a land mass similar to the Untied Kingdom, California or Japan and a population hovering around 4 million - open space is abundant. People with a love of the great outdoors will be in their element with so many activities on offer - from hiking, heliskiing and trekking to cycling, kayaking and fishing all staples of the New Zealand lifestyle (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/lifestyle.html). And, for families - with positive government assistance schemes and a safe environment - this is a great country in which to raise children. New Zealand is a great place for the long-term, but also offers a great way to experience something different in a stable climate during the current turmoil.

The advantage of using Align Recruitment to apply for work in New Zealand is simple - service. Applying for a new position can be a big challenge at the best of times, add to this the prospect of moving countries and there is a considerable amount of the unknown. Align Recruitment assists job seekers with New Zealand immigration and have the contacts within the appropriate organizations to make the transfer as smooth as possible. They also help facilitate with the various New Zealand professional registration boards on behalf of their clients to move their applications along. When they help you find the job you want, Align Recruitment doesn't stop there - their welcome services (http://www.alignrecruitment.com/welcome.html) are designed to assist offshore or expatriate workers shift country and start enjoying the great quality of life New Zealand offers. Align Recruitment will provide information on the cost of living in New Zealand, the lifestyle, the 'Kiwi' way of doing things and also provide detailed tips on how best to prepare for an interview.

Align Recruitment was founded in 2002 by Larry Beck, an American expatriate who holds dual NZ and US citizenships. Prior to immigrating to New Zealand Larry had been working in recruitment in the USA. He says "When I came here I recognised that overseas job candidates looking to work in New Zealand needed more information, about the country, about the types of work, how best to interview for a position in New Zealand, insights into some of the Kiwi ways of doing things and they needed help with immigration. So, I set about launching Align International Recruitment Ltd to provide that information so that overseas job seekers could weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of immigrating to New Zealand and make the right choice for them."

Further Larry added, "We work closely with our applicants - even if there is not an immediate job opening we are always looking to hear from skilled professionals - we are constantly getting requests from employers to find that 'special person'."

Eshoo and Upton Introduce Bill to Provide Relief for Millions with Arthritis

A new bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives today will strengthen efforts to prevent, control and cure arthritis - the nation's most common cause of disability. The bi-partisan legislation introduced by U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), will address a disease that impacts more than 46 million adults and nearly 300,000 children.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 26, 2009 -- A new bill introduced in the U.S.

"As the leading cause of disability in the United States, we must do more to help treat, cure, and ultimately prevent this disease that affects one in five American adults. This legislation will encourage doctors to pursue pediatric rheumatology to help the thousands of children who suffer from juvenile arthritis and have no access to the right care," says Rep. Eshoo.

The American College of Rheumatology and the Arthritis Foundation applaud the efforts of Eshoo and Upton for introducing the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act and urge Congress to take swift action.

"Arthritis and rheumatic diseases will likely touch every American in some stage of their lives - either as patients or caregivers. This is a serious issue and should be treated as seriously as we treat other diseases. We must require our lawmakers to take action and send a message to the 46 million that they have not been forgotten in health care," explains Sherine Gabriel, MD, president of the American College of Rheumatology.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, the personal and financial burden of arthritis on our society is enormous and action must be taken now. Currently, arthritis disables 19 million Americans and takes a $128 billion toll annually on the U.S. economy in direct and indirect medical costs.

"Even as the number of people with arthritis rises, federal funding for arthritis research has declined in today's dollar, and intervention programs that could limit the impact are being underutilized," says John H. Klippel, MD, president and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation.

The Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act would enhance rheumatic disease research and expand efforts to prevent, treat and care for people with arthritis and related rheumatic diseases by:

• Enhancing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's public health activities related to arthritis

• Expanding and strengthening National Institutes of Health programs relating to juvenile arthritis

• Establishing a juvenile arthritis population database

• Enhancing support for training programs

• Establishing a loan repayment program for pediatric rheumatologists to address the country's severe shortage of these critical health care providers

"This important legislation takes the offensive in our effort to provide relief to the 46 million children and adults who suffer from arthritis each day," says Representative Upton. "We cannot be complacent - few realize arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, inflicting severe, debilitating pain for one out of every five adults. We are long overdue in finding a cure for arthritis, and this measure will boost efforts needed to conquer this disease."

The American College of Rheumatology and the Arthritis Foundation urge Americans, both young and old, to show support for this bill by contacting their members of Congress. Call the AMA Grassroots Hotline at (800) 833-6354 or visit www.arthritis.org/advocacy.php

Preparing for the Next Disaster: Dialysis Community Briefs Hill About Emergency Response

"Dialysis patients represent one of the most at risk segments of the population during a natural disaster," said Bill Numbers, Vice President of Operations Support and Incident Commander for Disaster Planning and Response at Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA).

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) February 26, 2009 -- "Dialysis patients represent one of the most at risk segments of the population during a natural disaster," said Bill Numbers, Vice President of Operations Support and Incident Commander for Disaster Planning and Response at Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA). Numbers was in Washington to speak with an audience of congressional staffers focused on safeguarding the lives of dialysis patients in a natural disaster. The event, said Numbers, should remind everyone that "we always need to be ready and we must constantly work to be better prepared."

The briefing organized by the Kidney Community Emergency Response Coalition (www.KCERcoalition.com) and Fresenius Medical Care (www.ultracare-dialysis.com) looked at the problem of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) as well as ongoing emergency response and recovery efforts. With CKD rates skyrocketing, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Executive VP for FMCNA, Dr. Michael Lazarus explained that educating the public, policy-makers, and emergency response teams is more important than ever. Looking at data for the period between 1997 and 2006, Lazarus pointed to across-the-board increases in CKD rates:

• 106% for Hispanic Americans.

• 98% for Asian Americans.

• 55% for Native Americans.

• 49% for African Americans.

• 42% for Caucasians.

Since Kidney patients typically need four hours of dialysis three days each week in order to eliminate waste, toxins and extra fluids from their system, these increases also underscore the need for emergency planning. Any interruption caused by storms, floods, fires, earthquakes and other natural disasters that might affect electrical power, water lines or make routine travel impractical is life-threatening.

Thinking ahead is even more important than ever. "We're lucky that the dialysis community and emergency responders are working together to prevent the loss of lives," said Bill Numbers. "We simply need to ensure that we are doing everything we can, including educating the public."

Since March is National Kidney Month, briefing organizers hope to focus attention on the impact of natural disasters on dialysis patients. They also want the public to know what is already being done. Kelly Mayo, Project Director, Kidney Community Emergency Response Coalition, spoke about her organization's work with dialysis providers around the country. And Numbers described the evolution of FMCNA's response and recovery efforts, beginning with the Northeast power outage in 2003 through Hurricane Ike and Gustav. In 2008, Numbers said over 100 clinics and 8000 patients were affected during the 3 hurricanes in August through September 2008. During that time, Fresenius provided care to more than 500 non-Fresenius patients and brought in 4 large generators and diesel fuel to supplement local alternative power in Houston and Beaumont communities.

Reflecting on the importance of response and recovery efforts by Fresenius, KCER, and others, Bill Numbers said:

"We are committed to doing this whenever we have to and at whatever the cost. When it comes to dialysis patients, they have no options in a disaster. It is a huge responsibility to safeguard the lives of these individuals and families. And we will continue to work with government and other health providers to prevent the loss of life."

Kidney Community Emergency Response Coalition (KCER) mission is to collaboratively develop, disseminate, implement and maintain a coordinated preparedness and response framework for the kidney community in the event of any type of emergency or disaster. The KCER Coalition membership is open to anyone. To join the Coalition, visit our website and download a contact card or e-mail kcer(at)network7(dot)esrd(dot)net. Emergency preparedness resources and information on the KCER's current activities can be found on their website, www.KCERcoalition.com.

Fresenius Medical Care (FMCNA) is the world's largest integrated provider of products and services for individuals undergoing dialysis because of chronic kidney failure, a condition that affects more than 1.6 million individuals worldwide. Through its network of 2,297 dialysis clinics in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa, Fresenius Medical Care provides dialysis treatment to 177,059 patients around the globe.
Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia and News/Talk 750 WSB Extend Prostate Proactivity Campaign

Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia and News/Talk 750 WSB are teaming up to extend the Prostate Proactivity Campaign. The metro-Atlanta campaign has been extended to include a screening event Saturday, February 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kroger located at 540 Lakeland Plaza in Cumming, GA.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 26, 2009 -- Metro Atlanta men will have an additional opportunity to receive a free and potentially life-saving prostate cancer screening through The Prostate Proactivity Campaign, an educational outreach effort of Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia and News/Talk 750 WSB. The campaign has been extended to include a screening event Saturday, February 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kroger located at 540 Lakeland Plaza in Cumming.

During the Prostate Proactivity screening, representatives from RCOG will be on hand to provide information about prostate health, prostate cancer treatment (http://www.prostrcision.com/) options and prostate cancer individual cure rates (http://www.prostrcision.com/qa/cure-rate.php). The Take Control of Your Prostate pamphlet will also be available.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, and one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime. However, with early detection and proper treatment the cure rate is nearly 100 percent.

"Prostate cancer can be cured if properly treated. And the earlier the diagnosis, the better the long-term chance of cure. This is why it is worth being knowledgeable about and tested regularly for this disease. Keep in mind that prostate cancer is typically slow growing, so men who are diagnosed have the time to learn about the treatment methods that lead to cure," said Dr. Frank Critz, medical director and director of prostate cancer research at RCOG.

Prostate cancer is detected through a simple blood test known as a PSA test (http://www.prostrcision.com/qa/about-prostate-cancer.php), which determines the level of prostate-specific antigen in the body. Men 50 years of age and older should be screened annually for prostate cancer. African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer need to begin testing at 40 years of age because they are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer.

"News/Talk 750 WSB has always been committed to providing strong community support," said Dan Kearney, vice president and general manager of News/Talk 750 WSB. "We are happy to bring another free prostate cancer screening to the Atlanta community to improve survival rates through early detection and awareness of treatment options."

The Third Annual Prostate Proactivity (http://wsbradio.com/prostate/) Campaign kicked off January 2009 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a prostate cancer screening at South Dekalb Mall in Decatur. Six additional screenings were held throughout the metro Atlanta area prior to the additional screening scheduled for Saturday, February 28.

About Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia:

Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia is a Center of Excellence for prostate cancer treatment and research. Each year hundreds of men travel to receive prostate cancer treatment in Atlanta, Georgia (http://www.rcog.com/about/our-facilities.php) from RCOG. RCOG is one of the oldest prostate seed implant programs in the world. The first prostate implant for prostate cancer at RCOG was performed in 1977, and the first patient was treated with the combination therapy now called ProstRcision in 1979. Dr. Frank Critz, founder and medical director of RCOG, developed the ProstRcision procedure and has treated more than 8,000 patients with the disease in the past 25 years. RCOG is the only source for ProstRcision, in which two forms of radiation therapy are used to destroy the prostate gland. To date, nearly 12,000 men have received treatment with ProstRcision at RCOG's seven Metro Atlanta clinics. To learn more, please visit rcog.com.

Pharmacists Encourage Patients To Seek Their Guidance When Choosing OTC Medications

Eighty-three percent of Patients Select OTC Products Recommended by Their Pharmacist

Washington, D.C. (Vocus) February 25, 2009 -- According to the most recent Pharmacy Today Over-the-Counter Product Survey conducted by the American Pharmacists Association (http://www.pharmacist.com/) (APhA), pharmacists believe that 83 percent of consumers purchase over-the-counter products that were recommended by their pharmacist. With more than 100,000 nonprescription medications on the market and more than 1,000 active ingredients, it's critical that patients consult their pharmacist to maximize the benefits from medications and minimize the potential for harmful drug interaction and/or side effects.

The survey, completed by nearly 1,000 APhA member and non-member pharmacists, also reveals that on average pharmacists counsel 31 patients per week about over the counter medications. Patients who seek their pharmacist's advice include patients suffering from an acute or chronic condition (92 percent), patients that are worried about using an OTC product with other prescription medications (84 percent), and patients worried about taking OTC products with a specific disease/condition (74 percent).

"Pharmacists are the only health professionals specifically trained in nonprescription medications," said John A. Gans, APhA's Chief Executive Officer. "Patients can take an active role in self care by reading medication labels, knowing the active ingredients in their medications, and asking their pharmacist questions."

One of APhA's goal in conducting the annual Pharmacy Today Over-the-Counter Product Survey is to educate consumers that pharmacists have the knowledge and training to help them select right OTC medications. As part of the survey, pharmacists are asked to tabulate the OTC products they recommend per week in 77 different product categories. The results of the survey are published as a supplement to the February issue of Pharmacy Today (http://www.pharmacytoday.org/index.htm). Click here to view the entire Pharmacy Today Over-the-Counter (http://www.pharmacytoday.org/index.htm) Supplement.

As the medication experts, pharmacists are trained in both prescription and over-the-counter medications and can provide patients with important information about how medications may interact with certain foods, other medicines or dietary supplements. Pharmacists are the most accessible health care providers and APhA encourages patients to actively seek their advice about the proper use of medications.

About the American Pharmacists Association (APhA)

The American Pharmacists Association (http://www.pharmacist.com/), founded in 1852 as the American Pharmaceutical Association, represents more than 62,000 practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in advancing the profession. APhA, dedicated to helping all pharmacists improve medication use and advance patient care, is the first-established and largest association of pharmacists in the United States. APhA members provide care in all practice settings, including community pharmacies, health systems, long-term care facilities, managed care organizations, hospice settings, and the uniformed services.

Clinical Guidelines for Treating Chronic Pain Highlight Opioid Addiction Risk Assessment

Expert panel finds that SOAPP® is likely to be helpful for risk assessment and stratification

Newton, MA (PRWEB) February 25, 2009 -- Inflexxion, Inc., a company that creates scientifically validated and cost-effective solutions for critical areas of health care, is pleased to announce that its Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with Pain (SOAPP) has been identified by an expert panel as likely to be helpful for assessing the risk of opioid addiction in patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

SOAPP is a brief paper-and-pencil self report tool that allows clinicians to assess a patient's risk of addiction before initiating opioid therapy.

The multi-disciplinary panel of experts, convened by the American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine, conducted a comprehensive review of the evidence to develop a set of authoritative clinical guidelines on the use of opioid medications to treat chronic non-cancer pain. The guidelines, published in the February 2009 issue of The Journal of Pain (Volume 10, Number 2), recommend that clinicians routinely conduct a complete benefit-to-harm evaluation before starting opioid therapy, and do periodic follow-up screenings of patients who may be at risk for abuse or addiction.

"Proper patient selection is critical and requires a comprehensive benefit-to-harm evaluation that weighs the potential positive effects of opioids on pain and function against potential risks," write the authors. "Thorough risk assessment and stratification is appropriate in every case."

According to the authors, screening tools that assess the potential risks associated with continuous opioid therapy (COT) based on patient characteristics are likely to be helpful for risk stratification. The authors identify SOAPP Version 1 and the revised version, SOAPP-R, as among the tools that appear to have "good content, face, and construct validity."

In addition to SOAPP, the guidelines highlight the utility of Inflexxion's Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM)®, a complementary tool for identifying whether a patient, throughout the course of long-term opioid therapy, may be exhibiting aberrant behaviors associated with abuse of opioid medications.

"We at Inflexxion are very pleased to see both SOAPP and COMM included in these recommendations," says Kevin L. Zacharoff, M.D., Director of Medical Affairs at Inflexxion. "These guidelines underscore the importance of risk assessment and reassessment in this patient population. The inclusion of the SOAPP and COMM in these recommendations helps to validate Inflexxion's mission, which is to help to reduce health-related risks, enhance clinical outcomes, and positively influence quality of care."

The SOAPP and COMM tools are available for download at no cost through Inflexxion's PainEDU website (www.PainEDU.org), along with a clinician tutorial that includes video case examples.

SOAPP was developed by Inflexxion with support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an unrestricted educational grant from Endo Pharmaceuticals.

Texas Oncology Encourages Texans To Kick Colorectal Cancer with Screenings

Texas Oncology is inviting Texans to kick colorectal cancer by encouraging friends and loved ones to go for a routine colorectal cancer screening. Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of men and women combined in the United States, and the disease is estimated to have claimed 9,570 Texans in 2008.

Paris, Texas (PRWEB) February 24, 2000- - Texas Oncology is inviting Texans to kick colorectal cancer (http://www.texasoncology.com/media-center/fact-sheets/colorectal-cancer/kick-colorectal-cancer.aspx) by encouraging friends and loved ones to go for a routine colorectal cancer screening. Colorectal cancer (http://www.texasoncology.com/media-center/fact-sheets/colorectal-cancer.aspx) is the second-leading cancer killer of men and women combined in the United States, and the disease is estimated to have claimed 9,570 Texans in 2008.

Colon and rectal cancers occur with equal frequency in both sexes. It is vital that both men and women age 50 and over and those with increased risk factors be screened regularly (http://www.texasoncology.com/media-center/fact-sheets/colorectal-cancer.aspx) for this deadly disease. Despite the high likelihood of detection with screening, it is projected that 40 percent of the over-50 population in the United States, more than 39 million people by 2010, will not be screened for colorectal cancer. If all people over age 50 were screened routinely, research shows at least half of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented.

Colorectal cancer often lacks symptoms in its early stages, and because almost all colorectal cancer cases are diagnosed in patients ages 50 and up, regular screening helps lead to early detection, which increases the five-year survival rate from the disease to 90 percent.

"Regular colorectal cancer screenings save lives. Your doctor can recommend the best screening for you, but a colonoscopy is the most common," said Dr. Michael Kerley (http://www.texasoncology.com/providerresults.aspx?id=1410&terms=%40Locations_Location_8+274), medical and radiation oncologist at Texas Oncology-Paris. "Everyone over age 50 should make routine colorectal cancer screenings a priority to kick colorectal cancer before it strikes or catch it early when it's most treatable."

Risk Factors

Besides age and race, other risk factors for colorectal cancer include:

•Family History: People with a family history of colorectal cancer have a greater risk of being diagnosed with the disease.

•Diet: A lower chance of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer is a good reason to stay in shape. Overweight and obese people have a higher risk of developing the disease.

•Lynch Syndrome: This inherited condition affecting the body's genes increases the likelihood of a colorectal cancer diagnosis. In many cases, the positive diagnosis occurs before age 45. Texas Oncology has genetic testing available at some locations to determine if patients have the gene mutation associated with Lynch Syndrome.

•Other Health Problems: Diabetics and people who have a history of polyps and inflammatory bowel disease also have an increased risk for a positive diagnosis.

Screening Types

Screening tests for rectal and colon cancer are not as difficult as many people perceive them to be. In fact, most patients tolerate the screenings very well. Physicians can recommend several different screening tests for colorectal cancer. Among them, a Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) or Fecal Immunochemical Test checks for blood in the stool. Another option is a sigmoidoscopy. During this procedure, a physician uses a tube with a light connected to a tiny video camera to analyze the rectum and lower part of the colon.

The most common screening test is a colonoscopy, where the rectum and entire colon are examined through a scope to detect growths or polyps that could potentially pose a threat (see sidebar graphic for a description of a colonoscopy).

March is colorectal cancer awareness month. For more information on kicking colorectal cancer, visit TexasOncology.com (http://www.texasoncology.com).

Bederra Corporation Launches New Billing Services Division Expected to Add up to $500,000 in Revenue

Bederra Corporation (Pink Sheets: BEDA), a medical imaging and diagnostic Company launches new Physician Billing Services Division to provide small and medium sized doctor groups out sourced billing services as part of its commitment to synergistically diversify the company's business.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 24, 2009 -- Bederra Corporation (http://www.bederra.com) (Pink Sheets: BEDA), a medical imaging and diagnostic Company launches new Physician Billing Services Division to provide small and medium sized doctor groups out sourced billing services as part of its commitment to synergistically diversify the company's business.

Bederra Corporation (http://www.bederra.com), through its Lumar Imaging, Inc. subsidiary, has experienced staff that has been providing these services on a limited basis to select physicians. The new division is not only expected to generate new cash flow for the company, but will also increase the number of future physician referrals leading to additional revenue.

In today's market, many physicians have difficulty in navigating the constantly changing rules of Insurance providers, Medicare and Medicaid billing. Qualified individuals necessary to perform these services are in high demand and in short supply. Bederra has cultivated these types of professionals for years with careful training and will now offer those services to private practices.

Four percent of all insurance claims for services are rejected by insurance companies. Ninety-five percent of those rejected claims are due to input errors or incomplete information on the claim form. Millions of dollars per year go uncollected by physician's practices due to these errors. By correcting previous errors, and pursuing new monies generated, Bedderra can grow the working relation of the MRI practice and the private practice physician.

"Due to this demand for greater services, the company plans to offer this service to more physicians with the net effect of obtaining greater market penetration for its diagnostic imaging services and creating an additional profit center that will increase the overall company's sales and profits," stated Graham Williams, CEO of Bederra.

Horses Are Discovering Healthy And Tasty Benefits Of Himalayan Salt Licks Now Available From HorseSalt.Com Dealers

Every year, veterinarians recommend giving horses salt as an essential nutritional supplement (http://HorseSalt.com). But Himalayan salts are richer in minerals, providing extra health benefits for horses.

Grand Rapids, MN (PRWEB) February 24, 2009 -- Horse owners are being licked with love as they discover Himalayan salts now available from HorseSalt.com.

Horses gravitate towards salts that are healthier and tastier. Salts imported from the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan are amongst the healthiest salts for horses (http://HorseSalt.com). Himalayan salts contain over 84 chelated, healthy, bioavailable minerals.

"When I was researching the best salts for horses I found that ones with the most minerals and healthiest crystal structures come from the Himalayan Mountains. White pressed salt blocks are devoid of essential minerals. Salt, when it is pressed and baked, destroys the healthy crystalline structures," says Patricia Reszetylo, who has been a horse lover and equine specialist for over 30 years.

There are many health benefits for horses when they consume Horse Salts from the Himalayas:

1) Reduced stress from heat and cold and other environmental factors equals better performance from your horse. Australian farmers have noted better weight gain, under normal weather circumstances, and less weight loss during heat Other benefits include:

2) Reduced water bloating

3) Retains a healthy cellular pH balance, allowing better performance.

4) Faster, less stressful metabolism of food

5) Better respiratory and sinus health, bone strength, better sleep and vascular health

HorseSalt.com is the leading provider of Himalayan salt licks for horses.

Through partnership with Samaritan's Purse and Gift of Life, patients travel to United States
**Media Note: Patients will be at Children's National for farewell visit on Tuesday, February 24**

Washington, DC --On February 12, two Ugandan children received life-saving procedures at Children's National Medical Center (http://www.childrensnational.org/?utm_source=pressrelease&utm_medium=2_23&utm_campaign=uganda) to correct severe heart defects. Without cardiac surgery, the young boys would likely have died before adulthood, but they now have a normal life expectancy.

As part of the Phase I of a global initiative to bring attention to the health needs of Ugandan children, 15-month-old Daniel Kamaramasu and 2 ½-year-old Allan Wassanyi traveled 5,000 miles to receive treatment unavailable at home. Daniel, who was born with a blocked valve between his heart and lungs, was successfully treated using a cardiac catheterization balloon procedure by Michael Slack, MD (http://www.childrensnational.org/FindADoctor/Doctor_Marqui.aspx?DocId=470&Name=Michael%20Slack?utm_source=pressrelease&utm_medium=2_23&utm_campaign=uganda). Allan, who had a very large hole in his heart, underwent successful open heart surgery by Richard Jonas, MD (http://www.childrensnational.org/FindADoctor/Doctor_Marqui.aspx?DocID=1195&Name=Richard%20Jonas?utm_source=pressrelease&utm_medium=2_23&utm_campaign=uganda).

The boys came to Children's National through a partnership with international relief organization Samaritan's Purse, Gift of Life International (GOLI), and other organizations. Through this partnership, pediatric cardiologist Craig Sable, MD (http://www.childrensnational.org/FindADoctor/Doctor_Marqui.aspx?DocId=424&Name=Craig%20Sable?utm_source=pressrelease&utm_medium=2_23&utm_campaign=uganda) has led seven medical missions to Uganda in an effort to provide treatment for patients and ultimately build a sustainable cardiac surgery program in Uganda. More than 100 children have received life-saving treatment since the program began in 2003.

"With the dedication of organizations like Samaritan's Purse and Gift of Life, patients from around the world have access to the expert pediatric care that is available to children in the United States," said Dr. Sable.

Added Cindy Bonsall, director of Samaritan's Purse's Children's Heart Project: "We're glad this partnership has enabled so many Ugandan children to receive the cardiac care they deserve. We're glad they will be returning home soon with a second chance at life."

A key component of the missions to Uganda has been training Ugandan surgeons. Through training provided by Dr. Sable and colleagues, Ugandan surgeons are now on the verge of doing simple cardiac procedures on their own. Dr. Sable directs the Telemedicine Program at Children's National, which provides training and educational opportunities around the world.

The groups have joined forces to implement "Our Hearts Are In Uganda," which will focus all of GOLI's efforts in Uganda. The first phase of the program included treatment for Daniel, Allan, and three other children at hospitals in the United States. The next phase will bring 25 more Ugandan children to hospitals throughout the world to receive life-saving treatment for heart defects.

"We have saved the lives of more than 10,000 children, and through this partnership, we hope to expand our reach, to ultimately create a program in Uganda to ensure that all the children have access to the medical care they need," said Lou del Rosario, vice chairman of GOL District 7230, who was instrumental in raising funds for Allan's operation.

MEDIA NOTE: The patients will be returning to Children's National for a farewell visit on Tuesday, February 24. The patients and Dr. Craig Sable will be available for interviews. Contact Emily Dammeyer or Jenn Leischer at 202-476-4500.

Carestream Molecular Imaging Releases Western Blot Kits For Added Convenience, Better Performance

Carestream Molecular Imaging today released convenient, cost-effective kits for performing western blots -- a popular analytical technique used to detect proteins.

New Haven, CT (Vocus) February 23, 2009 -- Carestream Molecular Imaging, a division of Carestream Health, Inc., today released convenient, cost-effective kits for performing western blots (http://mistore.carestreamhealth.com) -- a popular analytical technique used to detect proteins. KODAK X-SIGHT Western Kits provide industry-leading components and step-by-step protocols designed to deliver peak performance from X-SIGHT Nanosphere Conjugates in western blots.

"The X-SIGHT Nanosphere Conjugates, when used with the components supplied in the Western Kit, outperformed our current western blot method," said Kevin McCarthy, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Pathology, LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport. "The whole process was faster, easier and the signal obtained was immediate, more stable and brighter -- with less background noise."

KODAK X-SIGHT Western Kits are built on X-SIGHT Nanospheres (http://mistore.carestreamhealth.com), which are available in four distinct wavelengths including three in the near-IR range. The kits are offered in several different wavelength combinations that include up to three X-SIGHT Nanosphere Conjugates, making them ideal for multiplex applications (http://mistore.carestreamhealth.com). Each kit is optimized for 10 blots and includes best-in-class membranes and buffers to achieve high signal-to-noise ratios. A separate Accessory Kit is also available for use with any of the X-SIGHT Nanosphere Conjugates or any other commercially available fluorescently-labeled secondary antibody conjugate (nanoparticle or dye).

The new kit delivers added productivity and can reduce costs when compared with purchasing each component separately or in larger quantities than may be necessary. Components suppliers include Fisher BioReagents (Fairlawn, NJ) part of Thermo Fisher Scientific and Millipore Corporation (Billerica, Mass.).

The kits are available worldwide. U.S. customers can place orders directly or through channel partners. For more information, go to http://mistore.carestreamhealth.com.

Separating Fact from Bioidentical Hype

Hot from Menopausal Symptoms and Bothered by the Media Hype about Hormone Replacement? People are hearing about bioidentical hormone replacement along with more traditional types of prescribed hormone medication from the Oprah show and other media. Lets separate Fact from Fiction. The word "bioidentical" is not an accurate medical description of this new, unregulated substance and it certainly is not exactly like the hormones the body produces otherwise there would not be a measurable and clinically evident toxic build-up in the body. In "Revitalize Your Hormones: Dr. Dale's 7 Steps to a Happier, Healthier, and Sexier You" (Wiley; May 2005), Dr. Theresa Dale offers a medically proven natural alternative to invasive and dangerous hormone replacement therapies. Dale invented the world's only clinically proven, FDA registered, homeopathic hormone rejuvenation formulas used for restoring hormone balance without side effects.

(PRWEB) February 19, 2009 -- Hot from Menopausal Symptoms and Bothered by the Media Hype about Hormone Replacement? People are hearing about bioidentical hormone replacement along with more traditional types of prescribed hormone medication from the Oprah show and other media. Lets separate Fact from Fiction. The new buzz word "bioidentical" is deceptive. It's not an accurate medical description of this new, unregulated substance and it is not exactly like the body produces. Clearly there is a measurable and clinically evident toxic build-up in the body.

Bioidentical hormone replacement is not natural even though it originates from yam or soy; it has been compounded and thus a synthetic. That's right; health providers perform thousands of before and after saliva tests on patients and it is clear that there is a toxic build up of all hormone replacement including bioidentical HRT.

Women are wary of recent warnings linking hormone replacement therapy with an increased risk for heart disease, stroke and breast cancer, more and more women are turning to alternative and natural ways to balance their hormone levels. Studies have shown that using hormones such as Prempro, Othro-Prefest or Premphase and bioidentical HRT causes the body to shut down production of its own hormones creating a dependency. Hormone replacement therapy can also elevate existing hormone levels to toxically high amounts, which can tax the adrenal glands, burden the liver, kidneys, and circulatory and immune systems.

Yet, there is a superior way to get both clinically proven and evidence based relief without being exposed to the toxic effects of ALL of these drugs. Health providers throughout the US are using FDA registered NuFem & EndoPure Homeopathic Hormone Rejuvenation, developed by Theresa Dale, ND, CCN, NP.

In "Revitalize Your Hormones: Dr. Dale's 7 Steps to a Happier, Healthier, and Sexier You" (Wiley; May 2005; $15.95/Paper), Dr. Theresa Dale offers a medically proven alternative to invasive and dangerous hormone replacement therapies. With over 20 years of experience as a Naturopathic Doctor, Certified Clinical Nutritionist and researcher, Dr. Dale has helped women balance their hormone levels through safe, non-toxic program. The world's only clinically proven homeopathic hormone rejuvenation formulas used for restoring hormone balance without side effects. These formulas actually produce healthy hormone levels in women of various ages, and eliminate symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, low libido, low energy and irregular menses. The formulas are FDA approved and regulated and are prepared at an FDA registered pharmacy. The remedy goes through a lengthy preparation processes. For example, an herb or substance is diluted and prepared in a manner so that just a micro amount of the original substance is left in the final formula. This method of natural preparation enhances all the properties of the herb and amplifies its efficacy. Homeopathic medicine has been used for 200 years throughout the world, and is natural without toxic side effects. See The Wellness Center website for more education about Homeopathy.

The medical establishment's approach to balancing hormones fails to embrace the concept of the body as a natural living system that is capable of self-repair. Its regimens are based on the premise that people need to look outside our bodies for hormone help via one-size-fits-all drugs. The only hormones that are safe for the human body are the ones the body makes. By using a totally natural and homeopathic program, it is possible to restore emotional, physical and sexual health by following simple and safe individualized nutritional and exercise guidelines.

The Wand Employed in Offices of Dr. Jan Linhart

Dentist emphasizes patient comfort and pain-free dental care

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 19, 2009 -- Dr. Jan Linhart, an acclaimed Manhattan cosmetic and restorative dentist (http://www.drlinhart.com), uses state-of-the-art equipment to ensure the best possible care for his patients. One of the most advanced pieces of equipment now employed in his offices is The Wand.

"The most painful part of dental work is often the injection of anesthetics," states Dr. Linhart. "That's why we use The Wand--it's virtually painless." The Wand is an anesthetic delivery system of the highest caliber. It includes a computerized injector that minimizes the opportunity for painful human error. Dr. Linhart explains, "If anesthetics are administered too quickly, it hurts. The Wand controls pressure and flow rate to ensure a comfortable injection." The dentist controls the machine with a foot pedal and applies the anesthetic with a tiny needle nestled in a pen-like applicator.

"It looks nothing like a syringe," continues Dr. Linhart. "The non-threatening appearance works to reassure patients. Additionally, it is lightweight and easy to handle, which makes application easier and safer."

One key feature of The Wand is that anesthesia is induced before the needle is inserted, and the flow of anesthetic precedes the needle throughout the entire process. Dr. Linhart states, "Because of this unique system, the patient can hardly feel the needle. That was one of the major factors in our deciding to use the equipment. Whether someone is getting a crown, a root canal or an implant, our use of The Wand makes the process as comfortable as possible. Patient comfort is very important to us."

The Wand is not the only pain-reducing product currently used in the offices of Dr. Linhart. "We also use the Waterlase MD." Made by Biolase Technologies, Inc., this high-tech drill uses a laser and water to effectively vaporize cavities and unwanted tissue. "The Waterlase MD can be used in place of a traditional drill and often removes the need for anesthesia entirely. This laser has many of the same strengths as The Wand: it is easy to control, precise, and it reduces pain and anxiety," says Dr. Linhart.

He concludes, "At our offices, a patient never has to fear the ominous sights and sounds of old-fashioned syringes and drills--it's a much more positive experience for all involved."

HealthSmart Contracts with MEDai for Predictive Modeling Technology to Improve Members’ Health and Reduce Costs

HealthSmart will use MEDai’s award-winning predictive modeling technology to identify members who may currently be at the lower end of a disease stage, but are likely to incur high costs in the near future, one to two years out. The program couples the identification process with an effective disease management program to focus on monitoring and proactively treating the identified members.

(Vocus) February 19, 2009 -- HealthSmart Care Management Solutions, LP, formerly Q-elements, Ltd., and MEDai, Inc. announced a strategic partnership that provides industry leading predictive modeling technology to HealthSmart’s clients and their members. HealthSmart will use MEDai’s award-winning predictive modeling technology to identify members who may currently be at the lower end of the five disease stages, but are likely to incur high costs in the near future, one to two years out. The program couples the identification process with an effective disease management program to focus on monitoring and proactively treating the identified members.

"Each member is assessed for health risks and appropriate inclusion in an acute or chronic health management program," said Pamela Coffey, Chief Operating Officer of HealthSmart Care Management Solutions, LP. Rather than solely focusing on existing treatment, HealthSmart draws upon MEDai’s forecasting abilities to identify individuals with evolving healthcare needs. Ms. Coffey added, “We assess the member's clinical condition and knowledge of their disease and implement an individualized care plan and educational program. The HealthSmart Predictive Management Clinical Team discusses the member's medication regimen and any life style changes that may be required to improve their quality of life.”

"MEDai's predictive modeling solution goes beyond affecting the bottom line," said Steve Epstein, CEO and President of MEDai, Inc. "it allows care management organizations to proactively educate and manage their population. In this case, HealthSmart's Predictive Management Clinical Team acts as the patient’s advocate, ensuring that every member has a chance at living a healthy and active life," he added.

Landmark Trial Provides Vital Information for Cardiac Disease Treatment

NorthShore University HealthSystem Ted Feldman, M.D., Lead Investigator

Evanston, IL. -- NorthShore University HealthSystem (http://www.northshore.org/) (NorthShore) has played a leading role in a landmark clinical trial comparing two forms of treatment for patients with severe coronary artery disease (CAD). The results were published on-line in this week's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The SYNTAX trial was a clinical research study that compared percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents and coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) in patients with three-vessel and left main coronary disease. The trial results did not show any statistically significant differences between PCI and CABG in rates of death or heart attack, an excess of stroke in the CABG treated patients, and a greater need for repeat PCI procedures in the stent treated patients. These are better outcomes for PCI than have been seen in prior trials in less complex patients.

"At NorthShore, we experienced stunning outcomes in patients whose only option would have previously been bypass surgery," said Ted Feldman, M.D, F.S.C.A.I., Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, NorthShore University HealthSystem, and a lead investigator of the trial. "The data in this study will provide cardiologists with additional information as they determine treatment therapy for patients with complex CAD."

The trial is the first randomized, controlled clinical trial to compare these two treatments in patients with left main disease and/or three-vessel disease, who are typically treated with CABG and represent a population with far more complex anatomy and advanced disease than those studied in prior drug-eluting stent (DES) clinical trials.

There were 1,800 patients enrolled in the randomized arm of the trial. All patients were assessed by a multidisciplinary team including an interventional cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon. If both the cardiologist and surgeon felt that they could offer equivalent complete revascularization, patients were randomized 1:1 into one of the two treatment strategies. If either the cardiologist or surgeon felt that one or the other revascularization technique was the preferred option, due to technical considerations or co-morbidity, for example, then patients were recruited into one of two parallel, nested registries for PCI or CABG. Thus, patients in the PCI registry had been rejected for cardiac surgery.
